For a taste of culture, a history of the Old West and a little outdoor fun, visit Billings, Montana.
As the state's largest city, Billings is a regional business hub. Known as the "magic City," it also boasts of museums, art galleries, theaters and shopping areas, which are all vital to the city.
It is the home of Montana State University-Billings and Rocky Mountain College. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Bighorn National Recreation Area, Yellowstone Park and the Yellowstone River are all nearby.
Settled during the Industrial Age, Montana exploration and settlement followed the rivers. The Northern Pacific Railroad was laid along the Yellowstone to where Billings would soon be established. The site was chosen for two reasons: two pieces of railroad-owned land came together; and it was located a mile upriver from an already-established point of trans-shipment on the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers.
Modern Billings has more than 150 restaurants, six golf courses, museums, a zoo, two malls, 23 theaters, the Pioneer League Mustangs (baseball,) Billings Bulls (hockey), the Magic City Speedway (stock cars) and rodeos.
