BILLINGS, MONTANA ---November 29, 1999 --- Located in the middle of Big Sky Country, Montana's largest city with almost 100,000 people is not only a regional hub for many industries, but also a vacation and convention destination for people across the nation and world. Founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railroad, the early residents nicknamed Billings "The Magic City" because it seemed to grow overnight. In reality, an amazing 2,000 settlers moved to Billings within the first six months of having the railroad.
Since the early 1900's Billings has become the regional center for the energy industry, agriculturally-related businesses, trade and services industry and medical facilities. Two oil refineries in Billings and one located in the nearby town of Laurel make Billings the oil-refining capitol of the northern Rockies. The largest mall in the region, Rimrock Mall, is located in Billings and attracts shoppers from a four state area. Also, of this four state region, Billings has the most advanced health care services, with two fully-equipped hospitals and sixteen clinics.
Recreational opportunities such as downhill skiing, hiking, boating, cattle drives and water slides all make Billings a great place to live and visit. There are also many entertainment options including museums, symphony performances, plays and concerts held throughout the year. In addition, Billings has a variety of professional athletic events for the sports enthusiast. Baseball, basketball, hockey, car racing, rodeos and indoor football, all provide quality entertainment for spectators to enjoy.
Visitors and residents can enjoy the modern facilities, amenities, recreational and entertainment opportunities Billings has to offer while appreciating the Old West hospitality this area is known for.
